Blackjack Ongoing Series – Part 3 of 9

Okay, I hope you’re ready to get right into the blackjack action. In the last installment of our blackjack series we talked a little bit about blackjack tables and the overall setup of the game, including playing with multiple decks. For this installment we’re going to talk about the action of blackjack. I’ll talk about what happens when you sit down to play a hand whether it’s online or in the real world.

The first thing needed when you sit down to play a great game of blackjack is a decision of how much you’re going to bet. In fact, we’ll talk more about betting, betting strategies, and money management deeper in this blackjack series. To play a hand of blackjack you must make a bet.

Once you’ve made a bet it’s now time to play. If you’re playing in the real world or online with multiple players, you need to wait until everyone has placed their bets. Once this happens it’s now time to deal the cards and this is where the anticipation starts.

As I’ve mentioned before, the action starts immediately to the dealers laughed and proceed in a clockwise fashion to the dealer’s right. The dealer will deal one card to everybody and then deal a second card to everybody. One of the dealer’s cards will be placed face up, called the up card. It is this card that you look at and base much of your strategy around.

If you’ve been dealt an Ace and either a face card or a 10, you have blackjack and win automatically. However, if the dealer is showing and an Ace you will get the option of taking even money. We’ll talk a little bit more about this and insurance later. But I just wanted you to know that to get a real blackjack it has to be on the first two cards that were dealt to you.

So it’s your turn and you will have a series of options. First, if you like your first two cards, you can stand. When you stand, you are saying that you want to end your turn. Another option is to hit. Basically, when you hit you get one card. During your turn you are allowed to hit as many times as you want as long as you are still at 21 or under. If you go over 21, its called a bust and you lose your hand instantly.

There are many more actions you can take, such as splitting, doubling down and so forth. In our next installment I will continue the blackjack action by talking about these options.

Five Great Tips for Blackjack Players

Blackjack, it’s a game and culture. When I look back over history, Blackjack was the one game that really started the concept that informed gamblers could beat the system. I don’t think any other game has spawned as many books, videos, etc. Today, I’m going to give you five great tips for playing Blackjack. I hope you’ll enjoy them and use them.

Hit a Triple, Stop at Third

If you’re playing in the real world, and you know the game some, sit at third base (the seat immediately to the right of the dealer). This seat is the last to act before the dealer and it can be crucial some hands. I would sit there if I were you.

Split Those and You Die

It’s got to be said, don’t split 10s or face cards. Oh, it’s so tempting for some players, but don’t do it. You have 20, which is as good as it gets aside from Blackjack. Why on earth would you kill that? Greed, yes. I don’t care if the dealer has a 6 showing, don’t split those cards. Your Blackjack life depends on it.

Count All You Want, It Won’t Help

I’m speaking to the online Blackjack players, perhaps you. Counting in the real world is a good activity, but online it’s all for not. You see, online casinos reshuffle the deck after each hand. So, it doesn’t matter if you count, because all of the cards are in the deck each hand.

I just wanted to share this, because I know of some online Blackjack players who didn’t know online casinos did this. Don’t waste your time counting cards online.

Shoes Are For Your Feet, Not Blackjack

Let’s jump back in the real world for a moment. When venturing out to play Blackjack, make sure you’re playing single or double deck Blackjack. Don’t get in games that use the “shoe,” which means you’re playing with 4 – 8 decks. That’s just stupid.

There’s a reason why all the $1 Blackjack tables use shoes. It’s worse for the player. Most good online casinos use single decks (as seen above, they shuffle after every hand, but at least it’s single deck Blackjack).

Don’t Bet the House. Know Your Limits.

No matter where you play Blackjack (or any other game), you’ve got to set limits for yourself. If you’ve only got $100, don’t start betting $10 hands. Ideally, you want to give yourself a 20 hand cushion—to account for swings in play.

And don’t start playing without limits and with an open wallet. You run the risk of spending way more than you can. Always gamble responsibly and have fun doing it. Set your limits and follow them. You’ll be glad you did.

The only thing left to do is hit the Blackjack tables and win a lot of money. Good luck!

Blackjack Card Counting – Part I

The first time I heard of card counting, now many years ago, I distinctly remember how I reacted, and it wasn’t a reaction of love and acceptance. My gut essentially told me that card counting was cheating; I mean how could it not be? Or, at the very least, it has to fall into the most dubious of categories of skill or indeed fair play. As time went on however, and the phrase didn’t disappear, in fact became more common and even boasted famous fans I began to rethink my attitude.

The first thing that came to my attention when I started to research card counting was that it is really not something for the amateur. Unexpectedly I learned that card counting would be very difficult for the blackjack novice and can only really be done well be people who have played the game, enjoyed the game, and internalized basic strategy; which I can tell you is no easy feat. In short the people who card count aren’t in-for-a-quick-buck, hit and run con merchants, rather they have spent many hours at the blackjack tables, they have put in the time and have become experts.

The next point that I realize when reading about card counting, was that the basics of it are simply logic; if no 10s have come out half way through the deck that’s good for the player because the dealer has to hit on anything less than 17; if there are lots of big numbers, i.e. 10s he is more likely to bust. Conversely, if all the high numbers have appeared that’s bad for the player, because when the dealer does hit he will only be left with low valued numbers which are more likely to help him than make him go bust. This translates as; no 10s, bet; all low numbers don’t bet.

Having realized that it is veteran blackjack players who partake in card counting and that the basic premise is really just logic, I decided to try to uncover a little regarding how card counting actually works. I was actually inspired to delve quite a lot deeper into the card counting concept. Card counting, as it turns out, is harder online than when you have the cards and the dealer physically in front of you; apparently the pace is quicker than any land based casino and this will ultimately affect your ability to count. However, this is not to say by any means that it’s impossible, and the online casino provides the perfect training ground for learning the art and practicing it until you feel confident enough to try it out in a land based casino.

In order to share the next stage of my blackjack-card-counting-rollercoaster-journey, which includes a basic understanding of how it works, you will have to read part II of my blog entry: suffice to say here, that I have in fact done a 180 degree turn on the subject.
