Play Pai Gow

Pai Gow is a fun Westernized version of an old Chinese dominos game. The basic game play is straightforward enough and it is popular in casinos because the relaxed atmosphere of the game gives players a chance to get to know each other.

Each of the seven players places a bet and are then dealt seven cards each. In addition to the 52 cards in the pack there is a joker that can be used either as an ace or to complete a straight or a flush. Players must form the cards into two hands, a five card hand and a two card hand. The hands themselves are almost exactly the same as those in poker. One player acts as banker although often the default is the dealer. Incidentally, seven hands are always dealt out even if there are less players at the table.

The object of the game is to beat both the banker’s five card hand and two card hand. If you only beat one of the banker’s hands then it is a tie, called a copy, and the banker wins the hand. In many online casino’s the casino is always the banker, but you should check this and always try to be banker if possible because of course it means you can win any copy hands.

The real strategy in Pai Gow is knowing how best to arrange your cards so that you have the strongest hand. Putting cards into your five card hand is known as ‘five-carding’ and likewise, putting cards into your two card hand is called ‘two-carding’.

You do not always want to put all of your strongest cards into either your five-hand or your two-hand if it means weakening the other hand too much. Most of the time it should be apparent what is the best way to arrange your cards but there are some common mistakes made.

The most frequent mistakes occur when players have two pairs. The best way to divide up or unite your pairs depends on the cards that you have. You will usually want to split the pairs by two-carding the lower pair if you have a paid of aces or your lower pair is made up of cards worth 10 or more.

There are however exceptions to this rule and here are some of the more notable circumstances when you want to play your pairs together in the five-hand:If your high pair is 3s to 6s and you have an ace, kind, or queen, then five-card your pairs play the high single card in your two-hand.

If your pairs are 6s to 9s and you have an ace or a king then you should also five-card your pairs. Finally, if your high pair is 10s to queens and you have an ace then you should also five-card your pairs and two card your ace.In all other circumstances you should five-card you high pair and play the low pair in your two-hand.

Playing Pai Gow – Part 3

Today’s lesson will deal with setting your hand. We’ve already got the game flow down. In another article, we’ll go over strategy a bit more. Setting your hand is the main function in Pai Gow. Don’t worry if you don’t know how Pai Gow hands rank, because that’s the next part of this series.

In Pai Gow, the Ace can be used at the front or end of the deck. For instance, it could be used as Ace, two, three or Queen, King, Ace. The Joker can be used as an Ace or to complete a straight, flush or straight flush.

Once you have your seven cards, I find it’s best for beginners to sort their cards from highest to lowest or lowest to highest. If you’re playing Pai Gow online, this might already be done for you. Remember, we’re going to be creating two hands from these seven cards-the highest hand, which is five cards and the 2nd highest hand, which are the remaining two cards.

When you make your hands, the highest hand must actually be the highest hand. For instance, let’s say your hand is: J J 3 4 5 Q Q.

You couldn’t make your 2nd highest hand be QQ, because the highest hand would be JJ 3 4 5 and it wouldn’t actually be the highest hand.

Let’s keep that example going. Part of the strategy in Pai Gow is figuring out how best to set your hands. In our example, we could do something like JJ QQ 3 and 4 5 or something like JJ 3 4 5 and QQ. So, we’d either have two pair and nothing or one pair in each hand. Remember, if you can win at least one of the hands, you keep your cash.

Once you have decided how to set your hand, you place each of the two hands on their appropriate space on the table. Online Pai Gow players will have this done for them.

I can’t reiterate this enough: don’t take setting your hand too lightly. It’s a strategic game. Ideally, you want your second highest hand to be as high as possible, so you can at least force a push.

If your second highest hand won’t have a pair, put the two highest ranking cards in there-out of what’s left. Let’s say your hand is: J J A Q 4 8 3.

For the above hand, we’d want to keep the pair of Jacks in the highest hand. That leaves us with the Ace, Queen, 4, 8 and 3. It would be best to take the Ace and Queen and put those two cards in the second highest hand.

Now that we have a basic understanding with setting hands, it’s time to go over hand rankings. We’ll do that in the next article.

This Poker, That Poker…Which Poker?

Around my poker table last night we decided that we were going to purchase for the next poker night a small white board. We would write on this white board which game we were playing (we play dealers choice, and it can change with every game), what that game basically looks like (we get very confused), and what the wilds are if there are any. So, I figured that if we needed something like that for our poker table, it might be useful for the rest of the poker world to have a little reference sheet that will tell them at a glance which poker is which. Here are some of the most popular internet poker games; this is not meant to be a description of how to play, but rather a quick reference resource so that you can can say, “oh yes, Caribbean Stud, that’s the one that…..”

Three Card Poker: This is the one when you get to bet on either your hand, the dealers hand or both. If you make the Pair Plus Bet you need to have a pair or more, if you make the Ante bet you are betting against the dealer; you make the bet before the cards are dealt.

Caribbean Hold’em Poker: This is a variation of Texas Hold’em and looks identical apart from the betting and winning. Most online casinos will have a progressive jackpot shared by Caribbean Hold’em and Caribbean Stud. Usually this works that a flush or better, that beats the dealer on the flop will give you a progressive jackpot win.

Caribbean Stud: This looks just like a five card stud game, except with this one the dealer always has one card face up, and Caribbean Stud is solely against the dealer. Caribbean Stud also usually has a progressive jackpot option on internet sites accessible through the side pot.

Let’em Ride: This is the one where you get 3 cards face up whilst the dealer receives 2 face down; one of which he turns over after the first round of betting. The dealer’s second card is flipped only after a final round of betting.

Pai Gow: This is the one that always has a joker; you get 7 cards which you split into a 5 card and a 2 card hand….you compete against the dealer.

Obviously there are many more varieties, but these are the ones that I see most often on internet sites, and so these are the ones that I chose to summarize. There are heaps out there so it’s not surprising the confusion occurs; by identifying a few characteristic elements of each you will find it a lot easier to recognize and recall games in a flash when you need to.
